Dental Implant Surgery Aftercare | Post-Operative Recovery Guide

Dental Implant Surgery Post-Operative Instructions | Recovery After Dental Implant Placement

If you have recently undergone dental implant surgery, proper aftercare is essential for successful healing and long-term stability of the implant.
Following the right post-operative instructions helps reduce swelling, prevent infection, and promote successful osseointegration (the process where the implant fuses with the jawbone).

At Dentistree Advanced Dental & Implant Center, we guide our patients through the recovery process to ensure long-term success of their dental implant treatment.

Dental Implant Surgery Aftercare Instructions

1. Control Bleeding After Implant Surgery

It is normal to experience mild bleeding or oozing after dental implant placement.

• Bite gently on the gauze placed by your dentist for 30–45 minutes.
• If bleeding continues, replace with a fresh sterile gauze and bite for another 30 minutes.
• Slight blood‑tinged saliva for a few hours is normal.

2. Do Not Rinse Your Mouth for the First 24 Hours

Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using mouthwash for the first 24 hours after surgery.

This helps protect the surgical site and allows the tissues around the implant to stabilize.

3. Manage Swelling After Dental Implant Surgery

Swelling is common after implant surgery and usually peaks within 48 hours.

• Apply an ice pack on the cheek near the implant area
• 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off
• Continue during the first 24 hours

4. Pain Management After Implant Placement

Mild discomfort is normal after implant surgery.

• Take prescribed pain medications and antibiotics as directed
• Do not skip doses
• Contact your dentist if pain increases after a few days

5. Eat Soft Foods During Healing

For the first 24–48 hours eat soft foods.

Recommended foods:
• Yogurt
• Smoothies (without straw)
• Khichdi or soft rice
• Soup
• Mashed potatoes
• Scrambled eggs

Avoid:
• Hard foods
• Crunchy foods
• Spicy foods
• Very hot foods

6. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking increases the risk of dental implant failure.

• Avoid smoking for at least 72 hours
• Avoid alcohol for 48 hours
• Ideally avoid smoking for 1–2 weeks after surgery

7. Maintain Oral Hygiene

Brush other teeth normally but avoid brushing directly over the implant site during the first 24 hours.

After 24 hours you may rinse gently with warm salt water.

8. Avoid Strenuous Physical Activity

For the first 24–48 hours:

• Avoid intense exercise
• Avoid bending or lifting heavy objects
• Rest and keep your head slightly elevated

9. Protect the Implant Area

Avoid disturbing the surgical area.

• Do not touch the implant site with fingers
• Do not play with sutures
• Avoid pressing the implant area with your tongue

10. Follow-Up Appointment

Attend your scheduled follow‑up visit so your dentist can:

• Check healing
• Remove sutures if required
• Evaluate implant stability

When to Contact Your Dentist

Contact your dentist immediately if you experience:

• Excessive bleeding
• Severe pain that worsens after 3–4 days
• Persistent swelling
• Fever
